Pulse (2023)

Opera Scene for Soprano, Alto, & Pierrot Ensemble (10’)

Libretto by John de los Santos

Written for the 2023 Mostly Modern Festival

This work was written in collaboration with director, choreographer, and Librettist John de los Santos for the 2023 Mostly Modern Music Festival in Saratoga Springs, New York.

The piece follows a conversation between two close friends, Rachel and Mina. Mina, a mother of two boys, recently experienced the sudden and tragic death of her oldest child Liam. This 14-year-old boy, up to the moment of his death, was extraordinarily bright and kind but unable to find the ease of happiness that other children found in their youth. However, amid his demise, Liam asked that his organs be donated, allowing others to continue living where he needed to cease. Rachel, a close friend of Mina's, also had a recent near-death experience but, with the generosity of others, was given a new lease on life in the form of a heart transplant (Not Liam's heart).

This piece outlines a short conversation in which they share their stories of coping and grief. While Mina struggles to find purpose in her son's loss, Rachel feels hopeful and excited. Although the two share no resentments, a stark opposition between their circumstances is apparent. It is only through Rachel's optimism and life-giving heart that Mina finds a sense of solace in Liam's loss. Much as the new heart Rachel received saved her life, Liam's organs serve the same purpose for many others.
