String Quartet “For Julia” (2020-2021)
for String Quartet (21.5’)
Written for Julia Moss
This piece is dedicated to my beloved friend and fellow composer Julia Moss. I met Julia during my semester abroad in the wonderful city of Vienna. Within days of meeting, we soon discovered just how many creative interests we shared and quickly took to becoming the best of friends. Soon after this, I began the initial sketches for this work. A great deal of the material is based on a cryptogram of our collective initials. What ended up coming to fruition was the sequence (G, D, G, Bb, A, Db). Fun fact, this work is unintentionally written in reverse chronological order. The movements were written in the order from last to first. As a result, you can hear a direct path from my newer compositional styles to older ones as the work progresses.
